I think everyone's sorta shy in new comms, but that's where friendships are formed. So I dig them. :D
I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN!!! I feel horrible telling someone what I don't like about their icons, because HAI! icons are made with whatever you decided to experiement in that moment. Or whatever feeling you wanted to convey. So I don't like saying what I didn't like and leaving it at that. I let them know what I think would've helped the icon reach it's potential. Because I figure I would appreciate that sort of comment, whereas the other one, I'd shudder over.
I know that some iconnists post their entries on their journals (personal, graphics, communities, etc.), but if you can't find a specific one, I know that comms generally open up the submission thread so that you can see who did what, and whose stuff you can snag. [I would check their journals just in case first, and if it's not there, message them and ask for permission first.]
I just started posting mine here. I actually have some of July, but that post is my eyes only right now, since it has icons that I submitted in competitions recently, and they aren't supposed to be posted until voting is done. :)
